Commenting editorially on the mobile customer registration "My Number, My Identity" initiative by the United Arab Emirates, the English daily Gulf News said: "Exercise necessary to stamp out fraud and make UAE much safer.

"By the end of this year, every mobile phone in the UAE should be re-registered to ensure that the customers using each number is associated with their correct identity.

This is no small task according to the latest figures from the Telecommunication Regulatory Authority, there are more than 13 million mobiles phones in use in the country, with a market penetration rate of 159 per cent.

Consider that nearly a million new mobiles are added to the nation's two telecom providers each calendar year and the sheer scale of the task of re-registering the numbers becomes evident.

Consumers have been made aware of this necessity and it's not as if the process of re-registering is difficult. There are some 200 outlets where it can be completed. It is necessary to stamp out fraud and tighten security and is in all our interests.

Let's not fall into the trap of putting the re-registration off.

When you get an SMS, re-register your mobile phone. Or simply take the five minutes and get it done anytime as soon as possible," the daily concluded its comments.
